About Us

Established over 50 years ago in the beautiful market town of Shaftesbury in Dorset, Rutter & Allhusen Chartered Accountants offer accountancy and taxation services to individuals, businesses and charities, as well as value added services such as virtual Finance Directorships and business consultancy. Client satisfaction is of the utmost importance to us with many of our clients staying with us for numerous years and a significant amount of new working relationships are a result of client referral.

We have highly experienced staff providing a trusted and valued ‘one to one’ service that tends to be more difficult to find in larger firms.

Our History

The original business was started by Jo Rutter more than fifty years ago, when he set up an accountancy business in the centre of Shaftesbury, building up a loyal client base over the years dealing with businesses, traders, and farmers from the surrounding district.

Our Team

Rutter and Allhusen - Paul Stacey

Paul Stacey


With over 25 years of experience, Paul is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Having originally trained with a small firm of accountants supporting small and medium sized businesses before moving to a larger big four practice upon qualifying, where he worked for owner managed businesses bringing together accountancy, audit, payroll, tax planning and taxation compliance through a single point of contact.

Paul has also worked in various senior commercial roles including financial controller, finance director, and operations director for household names such as Fitness First, Barclays, Sun Life Financial of Canada, and Banco Santander.

Paul is naturally creative and has already had a few mid-life crises including owning a Harley Davidson, playing drums in a function band, and he now seems to be growing his hair long and talking about “going solo”. We are not worried.

Rutter and Allhusen - Mike Brown

Mike Brown


After qualifying in 1997, Mike worked in full-time roles until 2003. Alongside a strong practice background, he has also provided board level consultancy advice to companies including DSGi, Hitachi, Sainsbury’s, B&Q, Calmac Ferries and Spicerhaart Estate Agents.

Over the years, he has worked with all sizes of business and enjoys the diversity, challenges and opportunities of working with clients.

Paul Chadd


Paul started life in accountancy practice 30 years ago with a large firm in Cornwall and whilst moving around gained exposure to main types of business and accounting systems. Having worked most recently as Practice Manager of a three office firm of accountants, this has given him insight to the running of a business from the other side of the table.

Paul currently oversees the accounts team and enjoys working with a range of businesses to improve the way they perform and ultimately their profitability.

Family time is important to him and he enjoys playing a range of sports including football and running, although his body is constantly reminding him that he is no longer a teenager!

Tricia Fillingham


Tricia has spent over 25 years working in finance and bookkeeping roles primarily in people based environments including the travel/leisure sector, charities, a school and the care industry where she ran their own family run care home for six years.

You’ll always be met with a smile and no challenge is too big.

Now her children have grown and are spreading their wings Tricia feels it’s time to start ticking off that Bucket List and is enjoying theatre, live music, travel and art amongst other things as well as her two gorgeous dogs. She also creates in textiles, has renovated houses and is planning on taking up the saxophone! Never too old!

Catherine Slade


Catherine is an AAT qualified bookkeeper, and joined Rutter & Allhusen after a long and varied career with a local estate agent in a wide role that included bookkeeping, negotiating, and administration.

All transferable skills for Catherine as she joins us supporting our clients with bookkeeping, accounting, payroll and VAT tasks. Catherine is well organised, and works 3 days per week.

Catherine enjoys spinning wool and sewing in what little spare time she has as a mother of three boys.

Rutter and Allhusen - Amy Tomkinson

Amy Tomkinson


You will find Amy on reception welcoming you on arrival. Her role is varied, and she works as PA to Paul, Mike and some of our clients - as well as covering everything from accounts preparation, VAT preparation, running a few payrolls as well as office administration and general clerk duties.

Amy is highly efficient, organised and runs a tight ship.

In her spare time she enjoys partner dancing, Ceroc, Blues and Tango to name a few and regularly attends class nights, is a demonstrator with the teacher on stage at Ceroc and has also taught a few Blues classes. She also makes the most wonderful flapjacks!

Jacquie Sanger

Administration Assistant

After a long and varied career at M&S, Jacquie retired, and joined Rutter & Allhusen in 2010 as a part-time Administration Assistant to the Office Manager. Her role includes recording clients' books and year-end papers when received, filing, photocopying, ordering stationery and reception duties when required.

She firmly believes a smile can open a thousand doors, so she's smiling ready to receive and sort your papers to pass to the clever R&A team.
